Supra Pubic Catheter plugging

Hi all. This is my first posts but I've read this forum for years.
I am a C4/5 male quad with a Supra Pubic Catheter. Since around January, my catheter tube has been plugging up weekly. I use to change it monthly. I had an x-ray to make sure I didn't have a bladder stone and had my urine checked for an uti. No stone and no infection. I went to my urologist and he said it's just junk from the catheter irritating the bladder wall. My urine color looks good, their is just a lot of sediment and snot-like junk in with the pee. I irrigate 3 times a week with a vinegar solution, drink cranberry juice and drink lots of water. The only other symptom is occasional headaches. Have any of you had this problem and if so what was your solution?

Hi Cory,
The condition of the urine that you describe and what your doctor called "just junk" means that your bladder is colonized with bacteria. Colonization means that the bacteria are present, but not is quantities that meet the definition of urinary tract infection.

I have a suprapubic catheter and have been instilling and retaining Vetericyn for nearly three years with great success of keeping infection and colonization free. My urine is clear, odor free, and does not have any "junk" or what my urologist calls "schmutz" in it. If you don't have sediment and "snot-like junk" in the urine, you won't clog up the catheter.

Are you using latex catheters? I developed an allergic reaction to latex and it caused excess sediment in my bladder which started clogging up my catheter. I started using silicone catheters and the sediment almost completely ceased. I was in the hospital a week and a half ago and they could only find a latex catheter in my size. I grudgingly accepted it and in less than 30 minutes began itching above my injury line. Another nurse ordered a search for silicone one and got me a Benadryl. After a little while, a silicone one was put in and the itching stopped. Unfortunately, it was in long enough to cause my bladder to produce enough sediment to block the catheter after about a week. I also got a bladder infection.
Never Again.

GJ, How do you use the Vetericyn? Do you irrigate with it? If so how often and how much do you use? Why does the Vetericyn site say it's for animals? Is there a human variety?

I really urge you to read the threads I referenced in my earlier post. You will learn a lot, especially in regard to the questions you pose here.

For now...I use Vetericyn as an instillation and retain it for 20-30 minutes once a day.

Vetericyn and Vetericyn VF are the same formulations as Microcyn, Puracyn, and Dermacyn (as you say "human variety"). There is absolutely no difference in any of these formulations except for price.
