SCI Nurse - how much stool softener at a time?

I've long been taking 1000 mg. of stool softener, 250 mg. 4 times a day. Can I take 50 mg. at a time? The reason for my asking is, if I want to take calcium twice a day, along with meds three times a day, don't I need a window of two hours before and after the calcium to keep it from interfering with medication (including stool softener) absorption?

    Thank you.

I think you mean 500 mg.

Here is an answer from one of the SCI nurses on another thread.

"Because of the way that stool softeners work, it is not necessary to take them at any specific time. They only keep excess water from being absorbed from the stool, and do not provide any stimulation of peristalsis. Of course you still need to drink sufficient fluids and eat high fiber foods to help keep your stool from being too hard.

You can take up to 4 of the 250 mg. daily either divided or together (for people with SCI)."

    All the best,
    GJ

Very good info. Heh, and I was worried that 3x100mg 2 times a day might be too much...lol Dosage instructions on otc meds can be useless at times imo.

Just keep in mind that those directions are meant for the "average" person, whomever that may be!
