The Enigma Of Traumatic Brain Injuries; Struggles Of A Sioux Indian Family

    By ROGER CATLIN
    July 3, 2007

It was the garish media spectacle of Terri Schaivo and the surprise of Terry Wallis, the man who seemed to awaken after 19 years of silence in a minimally conscious state, that motivated filmmaker Liz Garbus ("The Farm: Angola") to examine the enigmas of traumatic brain injuries in her documentary "Coma" (HBO, 9 p.m.).

Those charged controversies may now be off the front page, but brain injuries still affect more Americans each year than breast cancer, multiple sclerosis, HIV/AIDS and spinal cord injury combined, according to the Brain Injury Association of America.

To examine the various stages of injury, Garbus follows the cases of four patients at the Center for Head Injuries at the JFK Medical Center in Edison, N.J., over the course of the critical first year of their injuries. Two were hurt in car crashes, one fell from a balcony, another was assaulted and thrown off a bridge.

As we follow their struggles, the pain and courage of their families and the dedication of the hospital staff, the variation in their recovery, or lack of it, is wide.

Because two interesting side stories didn't really fit into the feature about the four, Garbus also provides a couple of short films available to On Demand customers, about Wallis, who began speaking after 19 years but still thought he was in the Reagan era, and another subject who had an even more pronounced recovery.
