register procedure badly flawed

When registering, the display name field is listed as optional, to be filled with the user name if left blank. But if you do that, and finish all the information, you see a message that the display name field is mandatory; then when you go back, all your information has been deleted! Seems to be very poor design. Or am I missing something?
