    St. Thomas Hospital was founded in 1922 through a bequest from Charles Deering of Cleveland. Although the hospital was operated by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Augustine, the articles of incorporation, signed in 1926, made the hospital a nondenominational, nonprofit general hospital.     Southwest General Health Center is a 340-bed not-for-profit health center that provides primary and specialty care in the southwest quadrant of Greater Cleveland. Southwest General provides services in maternity, pediatric, medical-surgical, cardiac and emergency care, as well as in physical and occupational therapy and rehabilitation, sports medicine, mental health, alcoholism and chemical dependency treatment and women's health, among others. The health center is designed as a Level II Trauma Center, partly due to its location adjacent to the area's major freeways and its close proximity to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, for which it is the designated hospital. The health center also houses an 82,000-square-foot surgery pavilion with state-of-the-art technology to accommodate all types of surgery with the exception of transplants and a few other highly specialized procedures. The health center also maintains two Urgicare Centers to provide care for minor medical needs, a large facility for outpatient procedures and physicians' offices in nearby Strongsville and a fitness center called LifeWorks of Southwest General that incorporates state-of-the-art equipment, with individualized fitness counseling within a medical model. As a result of a partnering agreement created with University Hospitals Health System in Cleveland, Southwest General also offers select services from Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital and the Ireland Cancer Center and it is currently working on renovations in the women's and children's area which will allow it to grow closer to providing a MacDonald Women's Hospital model as well.
