A song that used to haunt me when I was a kid. I just realized it still does.

I used to have dreams starting when I was 10 or so of being a Marine in Vietnam. It was a regular dream I had probably once or twice a week. I was alone and deep in some jungle, hiding behind a tree with lush green foliage everywhere, clutching fiercely to my M16 as hundreds and hundreds of the NVA walked slowly by, just a foot or two away, looking all around for me, poking their rifles through the foliage, and in my dream I was so afraid, and didn't know whether to just start blasting away or pray that I wouldn't be noticed. The NVA kept getting closer and closer, I could smell their sweat as they brushed up against the tree, and I knew they were going to see me, and I hugged the tree closer to try to hide, trying to become the tree, trying to burrow into the trunk. Then one of them looks straight into my eyes and sees me, and starts to yell, and I start screaming and shooting and that's when I'd wake up.

I had that dream for years, and the last time I had it was while in the hospital after my injury when I was 24yo. I scared the hell out of some of the nurses because I had that dream while half awake and full of painkillers, reliving it as if it were real and happening right then. One nurse said it was exactly what her big brother had written to her when she was little, from Nam, and she didn't want to be one of my nurses any longer because it spooked her. Her brother never made it back.

I don't know if this song was the trigger for the first dream, or if I heard this song after having the dreams for a while.
