Hasta La Vista (Come as You Are)

This Belgian film, with both its old and new title, won the top awards at the Montreal Film Festival, and was a hit at the recent Palm Springs Film Festival. We saw it last night at the Cinema Society.

Hasta La Vista is a fictional story about 3 young men with disabilities who decide to go on a road trip together from Belgium to Spain, with the ultimate goal of visiting a brothel which they heard about in Spain. They go in spite of their families' resistance (all are good hearted, but overly protective). While the nature of their disabilities is not discussed, one appears to have CP, another is paraplegic due to some undisclosed cancer, and the third is legally blind. The fourth major character is the nurse/driver they hire to accompany and assist them. I enjoyed the film. The characters were real, and many of the situations addressed will ring true with the members of these forums. If you get an opportunity to see this, grab it.

Unfortunately they do not yet have a USA distributor.

I saw the new Mark Walburg film 'Contraband' yesterday and thought it was great fun. One of those totally escapist movies that require no thought but causes the adrenalin to flow watching car chases, timing that needs to be down to the second, and a nice little twist at the end that no one could see coming.

I also saw Carnage this weekend, which is based on a play...the whole movie takes place in a NYC apartment. Great acting by Kate Winslet, Jodie Foster, John C. Reilly, Christoph Waltz), many hilarious moments (black comedy). Directed by Roman Polanski. It sort of reminded me of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolfe" although not quite that dark.

If you like stories about modern manners, marriage issues, and PC one-up-manship, this one is for you. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

I saw Yohan - barnevandrer, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1230478, and was thinking of you. Norway 100 years ago, very poor and the children were wandering for work for the summer. Beautiful nature and animals, true story, good actors like Kris Kristoffersen, Dennis Storhøi and some Norwegian actors. This is from the south of Norway, I never knew they sent their children around like that.

That is a fun movie...what make up can do!!!!

We are watching the Showtimes series The Borgias. Interesting, but some of it gets a little old and repetitive.

              All the best,

I just finished watching "The Queen". It's about the royal family's response to Princess Diana's death back in '97. It's really good if you want to see that side of things.

"Higher Ground" on DVD. Vera Farmiga acts and directs. A balanced look at fundamentalist Christian religions.

I will keep my eyes open for it. It is not currently available through Netflix though.

Saw a sneak of Albert Nobbs today with the amazing Glenn Close. A very quirky and unusual film, but well acted and beautifully photographed. We had the director as our speaker, and he was excellent. Entire budget for this film, which Glenn Close has wanted to make for many years since starring in the same role off Broadway in 1982 was $7.5 million (a pittance in today's movie business). They filmed it in 32 days.

                          Love and Other Drugs

It was good if you're into romantic comedies...I guess?

Pharmaceutical representative Jamie Randall (Jake Gyllenhaal) becomes a player in the big game of male-performance-enhancement-drug sales and, along the way, finds unexpected romance with a woman (Anne Hathaway) suffering from Parkinson's disease. Based on the real-life Jamie Reidy's memoir, Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman, this satirical look inside the culture of Big Pharm is directed by Edward Zwick.

That movie was ok. And you get to see Anne Hathaway's boobies a few times.

I got streaming netflix & I've been catching up on all kinds of flicks... I caught that weird Joaquin Pheonix doc 'I'm still here', 'Rabbit Hole' w/Nicole Kidman (pretty but depressing), 'Restrepo' (war doc), 'Happythankyoumoreplease' (Garden-State-ish w/one of the guys from HIMYM)
