First, one must understand that amber is the hardened fossilized resin from ancient trees. In the Dominican Republic, the tree is Hyemnaea (a leguminous trees) Or of a variety of coniferous and angiospermous trees.(Lundberg, 2000) The amber resin is so structurally sound, that it undergoes little change when it is buried in the earth. If the proper conditions for change exist on the earth, the resin then becomes amber. However, if the actual resin does not undergo that slight chemical change, the resin becomes copal. Due to its unique makeup, amber is able to stay embedded in the earth for millions of years. (Mashriq, 2000) The actual composition of amber is very complex. It is made up of four major elements, which give amber its unique characteristics. According to (Platt, 1999) the major elements involved are generally in this proportion: 67-87% Carbon, 15% Oxygen, 8.5-11% Hydrogen, and approximately .26% Sulphur. Although the specific makeup can vary in composition, this is what amber is most commonly formed of. Amber actually relates to the resin that contains a chemical called succinic acid. (Platt, 1999)This chemical is written in the form COOH(CH2), which determines whether the amber is opaque or clear.
Not all amber is derived from pine resin, as other trees also release similar resins, but pines are considered a primary source. Pine resin contains a number of aromatic compounds: the terpenes, such as pinene, carene, sabinene, limonene, etc., which may be lost during the period of aging to become amber. In a single study of Baltic amber reported in 1877, but repeated by most modern authors, it was said to have 3-8% succinate (succinic acid), which is probably a derivative of the original simple terpenes.

Gastric mucosal damage was produced in rats by administering 200 mg/kg orally. This damage was treated with the aqueous extract of Amber Poly formulation (40 mg/kg) for 15 days orally. Pre administration of Amber Poly formulation at a dose of 40 mg/kg, decreased the ulcer index, lipid peroxidation, conjugated diene and protein carbonyl content and increased the antioxidant enzyme levels. The lipid levels were maintained at near normalcy when treated with Amber Poly formulation in aspirin administered rats. The work has been undertaken to study the effect of Amber poly formulation on experimental gastric ulceration and their possible ant oxidative mechanism to cure ulcer.
